What are sight words?
Sight words are high frequency children’s book words that often do not follow normal phonics rules. They can be difficult for early readers since the words cannot be sounded out. Kids who are able to recognize these words on sight are better equipped to read and understand books that use these words. The Dolch sight words and Fry sight words were created by separate research teams who categorized the most common words to appear in children’s texts throughout the 1900’s. Dolch words primarily focus on PreK- 2nd grade words and Fry words are for Grades 3-9 though the two lists share many of the same words.
