    Description

This is a set consisting of a silicate Nd:glass laser rod, 10 mm dia. x 160 mm length with Brewster ends, and a linear pulsed Xe flashlamp of matching discharge size 10 mm dia. x 140 mm length (picture #1). Both are new, never used, in perfect condition. The laser rod is type GLS-1, made in Russia in 1976 (pictures #2, #3). It has its ends at Brewster angle with parallelism better than 2 arcmin and a perfect surface finish and optical homogeneity (see original QA sheet, picture #2). The glass has about 2 % doping with Nd

with good damage properties for Q-switch operation, either as oscillator or as amplifier. The lamp is type XL 615/10/5.5, made by English Electric Valve (EEV, now e2v technologies), UK. It is also new, no original box (pictures #4 - #6). The total length of the lamp (with electrodes) is 220 mm and its outer diameter is 12 mm. The electrodes are polarized, the anode is the shiny one, marked in red (picture #5), the cathode is the grey one, with a "granulated-surface" appearance (picture #6). The following charging/discharge circuit data are for a similar size flashtube made by Verre et Quartz, France, due to the unavailability of the EEV flashlamp catalog oft hat time (see flashlamps-vq.com/CatalogueVQF.pdf). The closest such lamp for comparison is VQX 1315. Although the technology of the seals between the electrodes and the fused silica envelope is different at EEV from Verre et Quartz, the operating characteristics can be considered similar, at least as a first approximation. Operating DC voltage V

    0
    = 1,500 V; nominal stored energy E
    0
    = 1,125 J; pulse duration T
    1/3
= 1,000 us; expected lifetime (no. of pulses) cca. 100,000. Max. ave. power in open air: 450 W; max. ave. power in water: 3,000 W. Typical trigger voltage: 19 kV - 22 kV. Variation from the typical operating regime can be obtained following the design recommendation from the above catalog. The set is intended for professionals and hobbyists of solid-state lasers, to make a laser oscillator or a laser amplifier.
