MILK,  by Dustin Lance Black, 2008 Awards Consideration Screenplay, Focus Features / Universal, 8 x 6-inch well-bound PB with stiff covers,104 pp., near-excellent condition - clean and tight with unbroken spine, bright covers and pages; several page near the middle have small, soft bends - not creases - at tip of upper corners).
Gus Van Sant (DRUGSTORE COWBOY, GOOD WILL HUNTING) directing this compelling, heartbreaking drama about New Yorker Harvey Milk, whose parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. He earned a degree in math from what is now the State University of New York - Albany. He worked for several years as a statistician and actuary, conducting a number of discreet gay affairs which didn't work out. Although he leaned conservative for a time due to the influence of a Republican activist lover, he shifted politics and eventually moved to San Fran's Castro District to start over with his own people. He opened a camera shop which became a salon for gay men. He organized the community's purchasing power and leveraged political partnerships. With his gay lover Scott Smith as his campaign manager, he ran for and won a seat on the City's Board Of Supervisors. whose president was Diane Feinstein. The same day he won his seat, a conservative district elected Dan White. The two men were opponents on the board and their feud came to a head over a referendum aimed at banning gay men from public school jobs. Only eleven months into their terms, White brought a gun to work and killed Milk. He was Califonia's first openly gay elected official and in death became a martyr to the gay rights movement.  Sean Penn played Milk, James Franco was his lover, and Josh Brolin played Dan White. Emile Hirsch and Diego Luna were featured. It was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Brolin), Editing, Costume Design and Original Score (Danny Elfman). It won for Lead Actor (Penn) and Original Script (Dustin Lance Black).
MILK - 2008 Screener, Focus Features; 7.45 x 5.375-inch fold-out cardboard sleeve containing DVD; brand new and still sealed, although there's a tiny tear in the clear quarter-zie seal at the open end.
