The bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) is one of the most magnicient native animals found in North America. The bighorn sheep is named for the large dark brown curved horn borne by males. Females have horns also, but much smaller, less curved ones. Both sexes have dark brown bodies with a white rump. The bighorn sheep ranges in the Rocky Mountains, the West, Northern Mexico and parts of Canada. It once roamed freely, played an integral part in native lore, and was a staple in native diet. Today, due to overhunting and loss of habitat, the bighorn sheep is rarely seen. However, it is not considered endangered. There are still hunting seasons for this beautiful animal, but certainly its fate is uncertain.
